They were made by Intertec, the American subsidiary of Swedish firearms manufacturer Interdynamic AB. The TEC-9’s most body was made mostly from molded or formed plastic pieces rather than from metal, and the tougher parts were made from punched (stamped) sheet metal or from solid metal blocks, which was developed in 1984. Due to simple design of Gun, made it easy to modify or repair. It was commercially successful and sold more than 2,50,000 units.

TEC-9: operated-semi automatic pistols

Just like the AK-47 is corresponding with violence in many war regions, It is recorded in American history that the Tec 9 was used in mass shootings in the 1990s and was also infamous for crime and gang warfare, it was used in the 101 California Street shooting and the Columbine High School indiscriminate killing. The event which was done is still alive in the hearts and minds of the people

Interdynamic AB is a Swedish firearms manufacturer based in Stockholm that developed an Interdynamic MP-9 an affordable 9mm submachine gun for military applications based on the Carl Gustav M/45. There was talk of the South African government adopting the firearms but they rejected the proposal so it had been given to different countries. Even after a lot of searches, Interdynamic AB Firearms did not find a government buyer.

this weapon was taken by a lead designer George Kellgren and then he presented it in the domestic market of the United States as an open-bolt semi-automatic pistol and redesigned to finish the bolt, In an open-bolt semi-automatic pistol, the bolt only needs to be pushed forward to fire, whereas in a closed bolt, its opposite one we have to face a lot of difficulty during firing.

As per the National Firearms Act of 1934 folding stock and vertical grip features were marketed under the subsidiary Interdynamic USA brand. Still, this type of designed gun was easy to convert into an automatic weapon. Due to this reason, many bureaus like the Bureau of (Alcohol, Firearms, etc. put pressure on Inter-dynamic USA to redesign the firearms as closed-bolt which was very difficult to convert into automatic weapons.

KG-99 Origin

This version was named KG-99 and became popular when it was shown repeatedly on the popular television show Miami Vice, Where it is legally fully automated by Title II manufacturers.

The KG-9 and KG-99 have an open-ended upper receiver tube where the bolt, recoil springs and buffer plate are held by a polymer lower receiver frame.

This design only allows 115 grains/ (7.5g)/ 9mm bullets and if you use larger bullets or hot loads, the plastic lower receiver will crack and thus the gun will be damaged. Later versions of the TEC-9 and AB-10 had a screw-on end cap at the rear to hold the upper receiver tube, bolt, recoil spring, and buffer plate even if it is removed from the lower receiver still even using hot ammo failure of the lower receiver problem will be solved.

Protection of reputation

After the Cleveland School incident in 1989, the TEC-9 was added to California’s banned weapons list or banned from use. For correcting this mistake was corrected by Intratec by rebranding the TEC-9 from 1990 to 1994 as TEC-DC9 where DC stands for (Designed for California).

In TEC-DC9 to hold the slings, the rings were moved from the side of the gun along the cocking handle to a removable stamped metal clip in the back of the gun.

In 1993, this gun became even more of a subject of criticism after it was used in the 101 California Street shooting. Then that year California amended the Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act (AWCA) of 1989, which went into effect in January 2000, to ban handguns with features such as barrel covers. The TEC-9 was a popular gun used by American street gangs and criminal organizations in the 1990s, its large capacity of 32 rounds of fire and low cost attracted them to it.

The TEC-9 was produced from 1985 to 1994 when its model and TEC-DC9 variants were banned nationally in the United States, by name approximately 19 firearms were banned expired 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB)

This ban forced Intratec to stop its manufacturing and introduce a new version. The following year Intratec introduced the new version AB-10 where AB stands for (After Ban) which we can also call Mini TEC-9 without a threaded barrel cover that was sold with a smaller 10-round firing instead of 20 or 30-round firing.

The AB-10 comes with a smaller 10-round magazine, yet can also accept larger capacity magazines like the elder TEC-9 model.

In 1999, the TEC-DC9 was used by Dylan Klebold, one of the notorious perpetrators of the Columbine High School incident, who later used it to take his own life.

In 1994, TEC-9 was used by murderer Benny Lee Lawson in the Henry Daley Building in Washington D.C., killed a police officer, two FBI agents and wounded an FBI agent and a civilian before taking his own life.

The Tec-9 was also used in the 1990 Drive-by shooting at the Nashville, Tennessee West End Synagogue by Leonard William Armstrong of the Ku Klux Klan.

In 2001, the California Supreme Court ruled that Intratec was not liable for the 101 California Street attacks in 1993, and Intratec dissolved that same year, simultaneously stopping production of the AB-10 model.

As it has been valid at the federal level since 2004 and is still available in the used firearms market, TEC-9 and its similar variants are banned by names in several US states like California, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland.

illegally sold in Europe

In 2017, a 9 mm machine/automatic pistol made illegally in Europe was confiscated.

Despite so many weapons in today’s era, guns are still sold with the TEC-9 mark, even though it was not developed by Intratec.

It is being told that this has been done to improve the market price of weapons.

Is TEC-9 a Good Gun?

No gun is good or bad when anyone uses it Knowing the difference between its good or bad qualities depends on where it is used Tech-9 was used in the 101 California Street shooting and the Columbine High School indiscriminate killing then this is declared as a bad gun because it was used for killing.
